Victim of Violence: Pastor speaks out after shots fired in Michiana church

A church known for reaching out to its community became a victim of violence this week when shots were fired inside the building.

It all happened at the Kingdom Christian Center in South Bend around 2:30 Wednesday afternoon.

The church is located at 2010 Elwood Avenue. That's on the city's northwest side.

Pastor Canneth Lee tells WNDU this all happened when his drummer was at the church working on some music, was about to leave and went to turn off the lights. That's when he realized there was a young man standing in the door, wearing a mask and holding a gun.

The pastor says when the drummer saw the gun he ran from the back of the church through the sanctuary and out the front door and called police. It was while he was running that the shots rang out.

Police arrived at the scene and found shell casings and bullet holes.

The pastor says he has no idea what the motive was.

“I want people in this neighborhood to know that we are not afraid, we are not scared, we are not going to back down. In fact, we are going to pray harder, we are going to work harder and we are going to work to make sure that everyone in this neighborhood knows that there is a church here,” says Pastor Lee.

“The harder the crime element pushes against us, it motivates us to push that much harder against the crime element,” explains Faith Apostolic Ministries Bishop Eddie Miller.

“This area is not the ghetto. This area is not a bad area. A few bad people does not reflect the whole of everyone in this neighborhood,” adds Pastor Lee.

Kingdom Christian Center is holding a service this Sunday at 11:30 a.m. It's a service to bring people together, to pray and to show they are not backing down from this.

Pastor Lee says anyone is welcome. He says the South Bend Police chief will even be there.
