The discovery of unmarked graves at a former county home for the poor near Terre Haute has halted work on a water line extension project.
Experts have started examining the site but don't yet know how many bodies are buried there or how large an area the cemetery covers. The Tribune-Star reports that a document in the Vigo County Public Library's archives lists the names of 49 people who were buried from 1898 to 1903 at what was then called the Vigo County Poor Farm.
City Councilman Norm Loudermilk says the discovery was an accidental find. He pushed for the water line extension to improve fire protection and promote development in a nearby industrial
Officials plan to move the disturbed remains to a cemetery.
