ELKHART COUNTY A dangerous intersection in Elkhart County is getting safety upgrades.
Next week, the highway department will begin installing new lights at the intersection of County Road 17 and CR 18, east of Elkhart.
More than half of the accidents at the intersection involve vehicles making left turns.
According to The Elkhart Truth, the new light will still have a green arrow for protected left turns, and it will also have a flashing yellow arrow. That flashing arrow will replace the green circle that allows drivers to turn left, if they yield to oncoming traffic.
It’s the first light of its kind in Elkhart County but highway officials expect them to be installed elsewhere soon.
The county is also installing street lamps at the CR17/ CR18 intersection.
