PORTAGE, Ind. An officer was trying to stop a possibly intoxicated driver when the suspect crashed into an oncoming car, killing himself and a woman in the other vehicle.

Portage police say an officer saw the man's car speed away from a McDonald's drive-thru window early Wednesday. The officer began chasing him after being told the driver was acting strange and was possible intoxicated.

The Times of Munster reports the officer caught up with the car on U.S. 6, but it accelerated and later swerved into oncoming traffic.

The Porter County coroner identified the deceased driver as 40-year-old Simon Moffat of Portage. The coroner says the passenger killed in the other car was 33-year-old Karina Gonzalez of Portage. The driver was taken to a South Bend hospital.
