PERU, Ind. Two South Bend residents have a lot of explaining to do after they were stopped with a stolen assault rifle in their car.

Alfred Dillard, 53, was driving the car when a state trooper pulled him over Sunday morning on US 31 near Peru, Indiana. Riding with him was Sherlock Mcelvene, 60.

They were allegedly stopped for following another vehicle too closely, but a K-9 unit was called to also search the car.

Inside, they found prescription pills, ammunition, a bayonet and an AK-47 rifle reported stolen from South Bend.

Dillard was charged with possession of the weapon, since it was stolen and he had previously been convicted of serious violent felonies.

Mcelvene was charged with drug possession.

Both were jailed in Miami County.
