Travel now allowed on Elkhart County roads

Eklhart County Elkhart County has downgraded its storm declaration from a warning to a watch as of 6:00 pm on Monday and county offices will be open Tuesday.

“This means travel to work is now allowed with extreme caution,” said a statement from the Elkhart County Board of Commissioners. “Traveling is at your own risk, leave early, drive slowly, be prepared for areas where travel is limited to one lane.”

According to the statement, the highway department estimates 15-20 percent of the roads will be a problem in the morning with areas drifted shut. Especially vulnerable are north/south roads and some county roads will be one lane only.

While the unincorporated areas of Elkhart County were hit the hardest by this storm, the city of Elkhart appears to be faring better than its surrounding areas.

“We don't have a snow emergency inside the city of Elkhart,” said Arvis Dawson, executive assistant to Mayor Moore. “You can pretty much travel anywhere you need to go to, but we are encouraging people not to go anywhere because of the brutal cold.”

Dawson said the city’s main thorough fares are open all of the side street should be open by late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning. The Mayor’s office applauded many Elkhart businesses for remaining closed on Monday to keep patrons and employees off the road.

“I think for the most part, the businesses have stepped up and done what’s needed to be done to keep their employees safe,” Dawson said.

There has been a snow emergency in Elkhart County since 6 p.m. Sunday. The Elkhart County Sheriff’s Dept. says they will continue to monitor the conditions to determine if that warning is still in effect.

Highway crews in the unincorporated areas of Elkhart County are having a difficult time keeping the roadways clear,” said Capt. James Bradberry of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Dept. “ They are experiencing heavy drifting from the blowing snow, and we are continuing to access the situation.”
