A third Elkhart County resident has been reported dead after suffering from complications with fungal meningitis.

According to the Elkhart Truth, the county’s health officer, Dr. Dan Nafziger, confirmed the latest death this past week. While 40 people have died nationwide from the disease, nine have died in the Hoosier state alone.

Doctors across the U.S. began making fungal meningitis diagnoses after discovering a tainted steroid injection had been distributed to 75 clinics in almost half of the states.

The OSMC Outpatient Surgery Center in Elkhart is one of the six health facilities in Indiana that received the contaminated drugs.
