Grabbing a hotdog or other snack from a street vendor in St. Joseph County just became a little more difficult thanks to a new ordinance limiting the number of vendors allowed to operate downtown.
According to the Herald Palladium, an ordinance passed unanimously Monday night, October 15, which allows only one street vendor at a time to operate on a private lot.
The committee responsible for writing the proposal says that it is unfair for business that pay to operate year-round to have business taken away by seasonal vendors. The committee says that vendors cashing in during busy tourist seasons must now apply to sell on the street.
Applications will no longer be issued on a first come, first serve basis. Instead, applications will be due on January 31, and permits will only be given after background checks on the vendors have been conducted.
