HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Department of Environmental Management has issued an air quality action day for northwestern Indiana.
The agency warns that children, the elderly and people with heart or lung conditions should reduce or avoid exertion and heavy work outdoors because Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties are expected to have high ozone levels on Tuesday.
Officials say residents can help by walking, biking, carpooling or using public transportation when possible. They also suggest avoiding using the drive-thru, combining errands into one trip and avoiding using gasoline-powered lawn equipment until after 7 p.m.
They also recommend turning off the engine when a car is idling for more than 30 seconds and conserving energy by turning off lights or setting the air conditioner to 75 degrees or above.
