Indiana State Police say a deadly 41-car pileup on Interstate 70 last month was caused by whiteout conditions and cars traveling at fast speeds.

The crash reports released Tuesday says investigators couldn't determine which car was the first to slow down or stop when the crash occurred Jan. 31. Sudden snowfall created the whiteout with nearly zero visibility, causing drivers to break suddenly at different speeds.

The Indianapolis Star reports drivers in the crash were traveling too quickly to maintain control during the whiteout or were following other cars too closely.

The driver killed in the crash was 25-year-old Harkirat Singh Sohal of Ontario, Canada, whose vehicle was struck multiple times in the pileup. Investigators could not determine exactly how he died.
