Update: Police arrest man in connection to attempted carjackings

A Coloma man is behind bars after informing police he is involved in the pair of carjackings that occurred earlier this week.

Police in St. Joseph Charter Township were investigating an attempted carjacking to see if it was connected to a similar incident in Benton Township.

David Palumbo, 41, was arrested after police received a tip of his involvement. He is accused of robbing a woman outside Orchards Mall last week, and then robbing another person at a KFC in St. Joseph Township.

The KFC robbery happened Thursday at around 7 p.m. at the KFC parking lot on the corner of Hilltop Road and South Cleveland Avenue.

Police say a couple was leaving the restaurant, when a man followed them to their car, got in the backseat, and threatened to steal the vehicle. When the driver confronted him the suspect fled the scene.
The victim believed he had been armed with a handgun.

The suspect was described as a white man in his late 20's to 30 years old, about 5-foot-seven inches tall and 160 pounds. He had a wide, flat nose, and was wearing a black or dark blue stocking cap with a red stripe around it.

According to our reporting partners at the Herald Palladium, a similar accident happened at the Orchards Mall on Monday.

Benton Township Police say a female shopper came out of the mall near the Jo-Ann Fabric and craft store around 9:45 that morning, and was approached by a man with a handgun.

He ordered her to her car, where he got in and demanded money, and then told her to drive a short distance before he got out of the car near JcPenney and then ran off.

Palumbo is now being held at the Berrien County jail for his alleged involvement in these two robberies.
