Thousands of South Bend residents are waking up to electricity Friday morning after going without for hours.
Most of the outages were centered on the east side of South Bend. They peaked at 8,700 in the afternoon.
I&M officials say there was a planned outage, so customers were being fed from different circuits.
But there was an unrelated equipment malfunction that resulted in a line down.
Crews restored power to the remainder of homes by about midnight.
The outage led IU South Bend to cancel all of its Thursday evening classes and activities.
The Michiana Family YMCA was also forced to shut its doors and is asking the public to call Friday morning to check the status of their classes and workout facilities.
The Y’s pool is also closed until at least noon Friday.
