South Bend man dies in M60 crash

Michigan State Police say a South Bend man is dead after a head-on collision on M60 near Edwardsburg.

It happened around 1:30 p.m. Sunday, near the intersection of M60 and Pine Lake Street.

Police say a pickup truck towing a boat was traveling westbound when, for an unknown reason, it crossed the center line of the road.

The pickup hit a Toyota Corolla traveling eastbound head-on, killing the driver.

His name hasn't been released.

Police say the driver of the pickup wasn't injured.

They don't believe alcohol or speed played a role in the crash, but say there have been several accidents on the same stretch of road.

"We've had numerous crashes here," said Michigan State Police Sergeant Michael Dawson. "I'm not sure why this is such a bad stretch of road. We've got three or four fatals here in the last several years. And some very severe injury accidents. I can't explain it, there's really no good reason."

Dawson says Michigan State Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

An autopsy will be performed later this week.
