South Bend resident Anne Drake has a dog who’s more than just her best friend.
Drake began losing her sight at age 46 and says Tabitha helped her battle back. Tabby is Drake’s first guide dog, and won a national award for her help.
Tabby won the American Humane Association Hero Dog Award, voted on by people around the country.
Because of a chronic back problem, Tabby now lives in Wisconsin with the family that raised her. She is employed as a store greeter and a spokesdog.
Anne’s new guide-dog driver accepted the award on Tabby’s behalf. The award ceremony airs Thursday at 8p.m. on the Hallmark Channel.
