HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A South Bend man was killed in a crash after authorities say he rear-ended a semi Sunday afternoon in Holland Township, Michigan.

WOOD-TV reports 50-year-old Randall Spriggs was traveling westbound at 70 mph on I-196 between Adams Street and 96th Avenue around 12:20 p.m. when his 2013 Honda Accord collided with the semi.

He was killed on impact.

“(The Michigan Department of Transportation) has this zone marked very well. The speeds start to reduce prior to where the lanes start to narrow down,” sheriff’s office Capt. Steve Kempker told WOOD-TV. “It’s just one of those things where people have to be alert once they see those orange signs that you’re coming close to a construction zone or you’re entering that construction zone. You’ve got to reduce your speed. You’ve got to be on your toes.”

Witnesses told police Spriggs had been swerving out of his lane. Investigators are looking into whether alcohol or fatigue were factors.

The 45-year-old semi driver from Muskegon was not hurt.
