South Bend is trying to become more energy efficient. And today, they got back a chunk of money.
The city accepted a $30,450 rebate check from Energizing Indiana for achieving energy efficiency in two downtown parking garages. South Bend will get an additional $65,150 for improvements to a third garage, making the total 2013 payout $95,550.
New lighting fixtures and LED bulbs have been installed throughout the city, returning a $250,000 investment in two and a half years.
The Energizing Indiana Initiative began in January 2012 to help utilities achieve energy savings.
