It was an exciting day for the South Bend Police Department as it unveiled a new addition to its fleet.

The SWAT team now has an armored vehicle to use in high-risk situations, but it won’t always be used just for that.

In fact, officials stressed that it would be used as a multi-purpose vehicle.

That means providing a safe way to get in, get out and, of course, provide protection.

While police stressed the hope that this vehicle will not have to be used, they say there is a need to have one.

“When we deploy the swat team I noticed that they were using cover like trash cans and moving to a tree and they were like a moving target out at these operations...as Chief Teachman said, hopefully we will never have to use it, but knowing the weaponry we face nowadays, there is a need for something like this, says former police chief, Chuck Hurley

This vehicle cost more than $162,000. $100,000 is coming out of the training and equipment fund, and the other $62,000 plus is coming out of federal funds.
