It has only been days since Halloween, but South Bend is already thinking about Christmas.
On Friday night, the city celebrated the grand opening of its holiday pop-up shops located throughout downtown. The six stores feature everything from handmade soaps to professional photography.
This is the third year for the program, which allows small businesses to setup shop through Dec. 28 rent-free. The hope is that the business will decide to stick around even longer.
“In the past three years that we've done the popup shops, on average, two a year stay,” said Krista Keirnan, director of business engagement for Downtown South Bend. “So we're hoping that two or more stay with us this year, as well.”
“We just thought it was a really great opportunity ... free rent and utilities just to test waters,” said Amy Klingler of The Pigeon and Hen Pottery.
The stores will be open Monday through Saturday and every Sunday in December.
