Dig out in front of your home, or get ready to dig into your wallet.

City sidewalk shoveling ordinances are in effect in South Bend, Mishawaka and Elkhart.

The law requires homes to shovel the sidewalk within the 24-hour period after snow stops falling.

There also needs to be two inches of snow on the ground for the law to apply.

South Bend gives homeowners one day's notice before issuing a $15 to $25 ticket.

Elkhart fines residents $25 off the bat if the sidewalk is not clear.

While Mishawaka's citations start at $25, but could be as much as $250.

The idea is to clear the paths for pedestrians so they do not walk in the street.
