Contractors next week will begin to fit sections of Interstate 69 in northeastern Indiana with cable safety barriers intended to prevent deadly crashes.
The fence-like cable barriers can prevent vehicles from crossing highway medians and colliding with oncoming traffic.
The Indiana Department of Transportation says a contractor will begin work Monday installing nine miles of cable barriers along I-69 between Indiana 28 in Delaware County and Indiana 26 in Grant County.
Cable barriers are also being installed on Interstate 70 in west and east central Indiana. Similar barriers are being installed along Interstate 70 west of Indianapolis and I-65 in Tippecanoe and White counties.
All the work should be finished this year.
Cable barrier systems are lines of highly tensioned cables between anchored posts in the medians of roads.
