Authorities say a one person has died and three others have been injured after a motorist braked to avoid striking a deer and his SUV slid into a tree.

The Howard County Sheriff's Department says the crash early Sunday on Indiana 22 east of Kokomo killed 37-year-old Adam Oaks of Marion. He had been riding in the back seat of the SUV

Three other passengers in the vehicle were injured, including two who were airlifted to a Fort Wayne hospital. Their names were being withheld.

Officers say a vehicle traveling in front of the SUV struck the deer and the SUV's driver, 39-year-old Eddie Taylor of Marion, braked to avoid hitting the injured animal. The vehicle that struck the deer sustained minor damage.
