A South Bend man who admitted to a handful of garage burglaries earlier this year has been sentenced.

Reed Pitchford, 49, avoided jail time but will spend four years on work release after pleading guilty to two counts of burglary.

He was arrested back in April after police were tipped off by a neighbor who recognized him.

They then used a GPS tracking device placed on his car to prove his connection to the crimes.

Pitchford later confessed to breaking into eight garages in the River Park area during a two-month period last spring.

He stole lawnmowers, ladders and snow blowers, among other things, and then re-sold the items to two South Bend businesses.
