Teacher request censure of South Bend School Board president

More controversy surrounds the South Bend School Board, this time with a teacher’s request to censure the board’s president.

Beverlie Beck, a second grade teacher, stepped forward tonight asking that Roger Parent, School Board President, be censured for comments he made about older teachers in the district. Beck has been a teacher in the South Bend school district for the past 57 years.

In August, e-mails sent from Parent surfaced that claimed young teachers did not get a fair chance. He made the statement “older teachers should be gently escorted out of the classroom,” a phrasing which the N.E.A says is age discrimination.

Beck says “when I can’t teach and do my job and have something to offer, then I will quit right away. But I do think my experience is worth something.” She disagrees with Parent’s e-mails, saying, “I’ve followed up on all the training and I do think I have something to offer.”

Roger Parent declined to comment at this evening’s meeting.
