A fire nearly destroyed the Rogers Park Pavilion last March, but now repair work has finally begun on the roof of the historic Goshen structure.
According to the Elkhart Truth, crews from Zehr Construction Inc. started working on the project in November, but it was not until this past Tuesday that the roof rebuilding phase got underway.
According to Mary Cripe, a civil city engineer, once the trusses for the pavilion’s roof were delivered they could begin installing a new one. Some of the major repairs to the structure include restructuring the charred roof and several of the columns.
On March 21, 2012 the pavilion caught fire after an alleged arson which caused an estimated $40,000 in damages. Police arrested Nicolas Lynch, 20, and Jose Rangel, 18, in July 2012 on preliminary arson charges in relation to the fire.
