UPDATE: Lincolnway back open after accident causes gas leak

Mishawaka, Ind. Neighbors are back inside their homes after being evacuated because of a car accident that caused a gas leak Friday night.

It happened around 9:45 p.m. near the intersection of Lincolnway West and Meridian Street in Mishawaka.

Police say a car crashed and hit a gas line, causing the leak.

"I could hear such a loud hissing right there out my window," said Christine Stahl, who was evacuated from her home because of the leak. "It sounded like somebody broke the cap off the gas pipe or something or a loose air hose or something."

Police closed Lincolnway West from Carlton to Logan and evacuated homes along that stretch.

Some residents reported seeing a person fleeing the scene shortly after the crash.

"The neighbors told us that they saw a guy in a white tank top jump the river fence," Stahl said. "Then someone was laying on the sidewalk right in front of the houses."

Mishawaka Police haven't released any details about any injuries or arrests.

People were allowed back inside their homes around 11:15 p.m. Friday after the leak was capped.
