Police "bait" bicycle thieves to cut back on crime

GOSHEN The following is a statement prepared by Goshen Police

Over the last several months, the residents of Goshen have been experiencing increased occurrences of bicycle theft.

One might feel that the theft of a bicycle doesn't rank particularly high on the list of crimes to affect a community, but it in fact it does mean a great deal in a community such as ours. Our community is enriched with parks, bicycle paths, and bicycle friendly businesses. In Goshen, bicycling is a major source of recreation, fitness, and many of our residents use bicycles as their primary means of transportation.

When the increase in bicycle thefts began, patrol officers in the Goshen Police department also began to brainstorm and implement new ways to deter this crime. The officers developed a "bait bicycle" plan and with the consent of the administration, put the plan in motion. Officers place a bicycle in an area with increased problems with the thefts and then in an unmarked vehicle, park a short distance away from the "bait" bike and wait.

The Bicycle Bait plan has already proved successful and at least two arrests have been made so far for Theft of Bicycles.

The Chief of Police has approved the continued implementation of this Bait Bicycle plan throughout the city. Officers will be moving the "Bait" bike to different locations in an attempt to apprehend the would-be thieves and ultimately deter such future, unacceptable behavior.
