Community helps Plymouth woman left homeless by tornado

Plymouth, Ind. An EF-1 tornado left a Plymouth woman homeless when it took the roof off her farm house earlier this month.

Now she's thanking the friends, family and complete strangers who have helped her get by.

At least three tornados touched down in Marshall County during the July 1 storms that swept through the area, according to the National Weather Service.

One of those twisters touched down right next to Judy Ramos' house.

"We heard this noise and I didn't know what it was," Ramos said. "It was my roof -- it was in my front yard."

Torrential rain poured into the home from all sides and at daybreak Ramos and her dog, Princess, found themselves without a home.

Luckily, some Good Samaritans pitched in on the spot.

"People just started coming and cutting up trees," Ramos said. "People from my daughter's work, neighborhood people, people that I didn't even know."

Some helpers came to move debris, some helped bring valuables out of the house, while others dropped off food for Ramos and her fellow workers.

Annalee Sutton, a former coworker of Ramos, saw a post about it Facebook.

"She said it had been a hard day for her and her family and that she was hit by the storm," Sutton said. "So I got hold of her and came out and helped."

Ramos said the response, even from perfect strangers, was hard to believe.

"I had people stop and say 'What can we do to help?' and roll up their sleeves and just start pulling trees," she said. "It's just been amazing. There's no way to thank these people enough for what they've done."

Ramos is staying in a nearby motel until she can return to her home, which could take another 8 weeks of work.

"It's a big pill to swallow right now but I can't thank everyone enough," Ramos said.
