It is probably not something any of us are thinking about it today, but South Bend's ban on plastic bags has gone into effect.

The new ordinance prohibits the use of plastic bags for yard waste collection.

The ban also applies to Christmas trees that are left curbside for pick-up.

Automatic tree collection begins on Monday.

The Street Department begins pick-up in the northeast quadrant of the city and will move clockwise through Jan. 17.

The decision comes after the city was cited by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management for having more than 100,000 cubic tons of waste contaminated by plastic at its organic resources facility.
