Dogs warn homeowner about overnight fire

A St. Joseph County resident is thanking man’s best friend, after his dogs warned him about an overnight fire.

The blaze broke out around 2:30 a.m. at a home in the 14000 block of Dragoon Trail in St. Joseph County.

Firefighters with Penn Fire Battalion 5 arrived on scene to find smoke coming from the structure. They also noticed flames in the living room of the home. The crew called for additional resources from the Southwest Central and Mishawaka Fire Departments.

Around 20 firefighters helped with the blaze, staying on scene for around two hours.

The man living in the home told firefighters his dogs woke up him up, alerting him to the fire. He then gathered his five dogs and three cats before safely leaving the house.

No word yet on what caused the blaze. An investigation is currently underway
