GARY, Ind. (AP) - Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson says a person of interest held in connection with the shooting death of a Gary police officer remains in custody.
The person of interest was arrested Sunday after Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield was found dead in his patrol car. Freeman-Wilson said Tuesday police can hold a person of interest on a warrant from another jurisdiction, but The (Munster) Times reported (http://bit.ly/1oz3i7R ) she didn't elaborate on that point. The Lake County Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation into Westerfield's slaying.
Gov. Mike Pence traveled Tuesday to Lake County to meet with Westerfield's family.
Plans for Westerfield's funeral haven't been announced. Gary officials say they're working with officials in Indianapolis, where a funeral is scheduled Friday for Officer Perry Renn after he also died in the line of duty.
