ST. JOSEPH COUNTY One of the pedestrians killed in Monday night's fatal crash on S.R. 933 was waving traffic away from the body of another victim when he was also struck and killed.
St. Joseph County Police were called to the scene at S.R. 933 near the intersection with Auten in St. Joseph County at 11:20 p.m. Monday night, according to a statement from the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.
The first victim has been identified as Michael Marks, 43. He was struck by a red truck which stopped after hitting Marks.
The second victim, David Fordyce, 49, was then struck by another vehicle as he tried to wave traffic away from Mr. Mark's body, the statement said.
The vehicle that struck Fordyce then left the scene of the accident. The car has been described as a greyish-green 1992 Honda Accord.
NewsCenter16 has learned that both victims were from the South Bend area.
St. Joseph County investigators and the countywide FACT team came out to investigate because of the size and complexity of the scene.
Police believe the two cars were traveling north-bound in the right hand lane. The two victims were found on the east side of S.R. 933 about 25 yards apart.
Police are not able to say at this point whether or not the victims were walking together.
According to prosecutor's office, there is no reason to believe that alcohol was a factor in the first crash in which the driver of the red truck struck the first victim and stayed at the scene. At this time no charges have been filed.
The FACT investigation remains ongoing. The FACT team is asking anybody who saw the serious injury crash or who has information regarding the 1992 Honda Accord to contact the Commander of FACT, Capt. Tim Spencer, or Sgt. Scott Parker at (574) 259-2966.
This is a developing story. We will post updates when they become available.
