SOUTH BEND, Ind. The sidewalks are covered in snow and ice in many areas, and that's causing some crashes.
Police say an accident near State Road 933 and Cleveland Road Wednesday was because a pedestrian was unable to get to the sidewalk and had to walk in the road.
The pedestrian crossed in front of a vehicle which had to abruptly stop, and was then rear-ended by another vehicle.
Police are asking drivers to pay extra attention to the shoulders.
“Unfortunately all the snow we've received recently, the sidewalks are not shoveled or plowed so pedestrians have to potentially walk in the roadway and that's what occurred here today,” said Sgt. William Redman, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department. “So just be cautious of the travel the roadways and traveling and make sure that you're being cautious of possible pedestrians that are in the roadway.”
One person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
Redman also cautions drivers to be careful before and after school, as kids may also not be able to walk on the sidewalks because of the snow and ice.
