The next director of South Bend’s Potawatomi Zoo could be looking at a 68 percent pay increase. That amounts to a boost of $40,000 per year.
The zoo director’s position is vacant at the moment, and has been for about 18 months.
The proposed pay increase could attract someone to the position.
But the proposal has already met opposition. That comes from the Zoological Society which is interested in taking over zoo management through a public and private partnership.
Under such a scenario, only one director would be needed for both the zoo and the Zoological Society.
If the pay increase is approved, the zoo director’s salary would increase to $96,000 per year.
