Attention Jobseekers: Niles combats unemployment with job fair

There’s a high demand for employment in Niles, Michigan.

This summer the Niles District Library is doing all it can to match jobseekers with their perfect employer. On the first and third Wednesday of every month throughout the summer, the library is hosting a job fair between 1:00-3:00 p.m.

“People are frequently here in our computer labs looking for jobs, a lot of the traffic is looking for jobs,” explained Laura Hollister. Hollister is in charge of adult services programming at the library and played a critical role in the job fair.

“The space is supposed to be used for the community, the community is looking for jobs so we thought—let’s see what happens!” said Hollister.

Eight businesses handed out applications on Wed. June 18: Michigan Works!, Lyons Industries, Trillium Staffing, Walmart, First Student, Berkshire Hathaway Home Services, US Marine Corps, and Williamson Employment.

Shannon Pelley stopped by the job fair, saying “I wanted to see what they had to offer and drop off my resume, I need a job!”

She, like dozens of others, have used the internet or wanted ads to look for part time and full time work. However, the job fair offered jobseekers the chance to ask questions and get some much-needed facetime with potential employers.

The Four Flags Chamber of Commerce has worked with local businesses to help publicize openings.

President & CEO of the chamber, Tyanna Weller, said the chamber wants to be a ‘resource.’

“We’re trying to offer them (small businesses) the opportunity to find employees. It’s one of the most daunting tasks to find employees and good employees to fill the positions that are open,” added Weller.
