Plans have been changed concerning the future of the North Village Mall property.
The mall originally stood of a six-acre plot of land on S.R. 933, just south of Darden, before it was demolished in the fall of 2010.
In 2011, plans were approved to build several new structures including a new apartment complex for senior citizens, as well as office and commercial buildings on the outer lots. However, those plans have been thrown out in exchange for new ones.
The newly filed plan calls for a skilled nursing and assisted living facility on the vacant site, which according to Michael Dobson of Diversified Real Estate, is the only option.
"There's just one use, it's an assisted living, physical rehab, skilled nursing center. It's going to be operated by one entity versus, which our old plan was to have multiple uses, upwards to five," said Dobson.
Ultimately, the plans to develop any of the property's out lots have been dropped.
At a meeting of the St. Joseph County Area Plan Commission on Tuesday night, the skilled nursing assisted living facility received a favorable recommendation.
Construction on the site is expected to start in May or June of this year.
