New murder-arson trial stands for SE Indiana mom

The Indiana Supreme Court won't hear the state's appeal of new trial granted to a southeastern Indiana woman charged with murder and arson in the 1995 death of her 3-year-old son.

The court declined to hear the case Wednesday, letting stand a March Indiana Court of Appeals ruling granting the new trial for Kristine Bunch of Greensburg because the evidence used to convict her was outdated, weak and wrongly withheld from the defense.

One of Bunch's attorneys, Ron Safer, says her legal team will try to get her freed on bond soon. Persons charged with murder in Indiana generally are not granted bond pending trial. Safer says Bunch is ecstatic with the Supreme Court's decision.

A message seeking comment was left Wednesday evening with the Decatur County Prosecutor's office.
