South Bend, Ind. While the Notre Dame women's basketball was in Nashville beating Maryland in the Final Four Sunday night, fans in South Bend we’re holding down the fort.
Thanks to some game preparations -- and a little help from the weather -- Eddy Street and other game watch locations were bustling with fans early Sunday evening.
"It's great to see the women doing really well," said ND fan Karen Cook, who watched from O'Rourke's Public House. "I'm hoping they win so we can see that big celebration tonight on campus."
With the team’s fourth trip to the Final Four in four years, devoted fans are hoping that this will be the year.
"I still think they're really good even though they lost their best player," said Jim Garman, a women's basketball season ticket holder. "I still believe in them, I still think they can step up and do the job."
Many Notre Dame students said they'd be making time for the Sunday's game, either going to watch parties or streaming the game during their homework sessions.
"Go Notre Dame, Go Irish! Especially No. 11. Nat we miss you on the court," said Notre Dame student Jennifer Jaeger. "The rest of the team, you guys are great and you bring a lot of pride to the university."
News of their win didn’t seem to come as a huge shock to most fans at O’Rourke’s.
“You’ve got nothing against our women's team,” said ND student Brendan Koehr. “It's just, they’re incredible.”
Notre Dame fan Karen Cook said she was only surprised that the team made it look so easy.
“I figure Maryland has done well so far that they might come back in the second half,” Cook said. “But when the Irish came out, they just sort of kept at it and Maryland could just never get the rhythm going.”
NewsCenter16 will have continuing fan coverage of the Notre Dame women when they head to the National Championship Tuesday night in Nashville.
