A northern Indiana company is looking for a big boost in business by building a new passenger bus that features a ramp for wheelchairs and those unable to climb steps.

Middlebury-based Arboc Specialty Vehicles says its new Spirit of Liberty bus will have seating for 37 passengers and space for six wheelchairs.

Company president Don Roberts tells the South Bend Tribune the bus will have a flat floor for its entire length. The company is promoting the vehicle to public transportation agencies around the country as safer than buses that use wheelchair lifts and for passengers who use walkers.

The company now has about 100 employees making smaller buses. Roberts expects to add perhaps 30 jobs in the next year as production starts on the new bus.
