Elkhart County - Two women are dead after a crash Friday morning.
The accident happened on the C.R. 5 bridge that goes over the Toll Road, between C.R. 4 and C.R. 6.
A black SUV was traveling northbound on C.R. 5 when it hit black ice. The SUV then slid into the southbound lane in front of a silver pickup truck. The impact spun the truck around causing it to push the SUV from the passenger side and into a wall.
"I was coming south on C.R. 5 and came up on an accident about 10 seconds after it happened," said Kean Swank, a witness to the crash. "Got out of my vehicle to see if anyone was injured and called 9-1-1."
Swank then said he heard someone moaning in the SUV. He went over to vehicle and found the driver, Dawn Leatherman, 47.
"We carried on a normal conversation," said Swank. "She was able to tell me her name, her age, her friend's name. She, like I said, was giving me information whatever I asked her, so I didn't think it was too serious."
But it was.
Leatherman was taken to Elkhart General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The passenger, Alice Barnes, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene.
MedFlight was called out to the scene, but did not transport any patients.
The pickup truck was driven by Ryan Eull, 32, of Niles, Michigan. He did not suffer any injuries during the accident.
The Elkhart County Coroner was also on the scene, and the Elkhart County Sheriff's Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene and is investigating the crash.
