Mishawaka residents interested in backyard chickens

A plan is hatching to bring backyard chickens to Mishawaka.

About two dozen residents attended a presentation at the city's downtown library Wednesday night to learn more about what it would take to change current city laws.

South Bend's common council passed an ordinance in February that allows residents to have small flocks of chickens.

Karen Schulte-Coman worked closely with city leaders for about four years before the victory and shared her experience with residents during Wednesday's presentation.

"The South Bend urban chicken alliance would love to see Mishawaka join us in having backyard chickens," she said. "We think it's the right thing to do in terms of sustainability and community."

Schulte-Coman says a backyard chickens ordinance is possible in Mishawaka and may even be a bit easier to pass since one is already in place in South Bend. She says there are three main things residents will have to do to be successful.

"You have to find someone on the council to sponsor you," she said. "Try to organize a group to be supportive of a bill and a measure. Then, get the word out there."

South Bend has an urban chicken alliance that helped fight for change. It now provides information and support to residents who are raising their own flocks.

Several Mishawaka residents say they're interested in doing the same thing.

"We're kind of interested in the pest control aspect," said Mishawaka resident Rebecca Mcgrew. "We have a garden also, a pretty good sized one, and also the eggs definitely because we go through eggs like crazy."

Mcgrew and several other residents are optimistic an ordinance similar to South Bend's can be passed in Mishawaka.

But, no formal proposal has been drawn up. Residents are still in the early planning stage.
