Michiana resident says her Miami Hills apartment has a mold problem

Miami Hills Apartments in South Bend has made headlines before, and now it's in the news again.

This time, for what some say is a mold problem.

One tenant says mold has been an issue in her apartment for months, most of it being in her 11-month-old son’s room.

Nicole Whittaker says there's mold all over her sons pillows, his toys and even his closet doors and she believes it’s the mold that is making her and her baby sick.

Nicole currently has bronchitis; her son Hunter has an upper respiratory infection.

According to Nicole, maintenance told her she needs to shampoo her carpets, wash her walls and turn on the air conditioning to fix this problem.

But, according to some professionals, that may not be the best idea.
WNDU spoke with the president of a local cleaning and restoration service and he says air movement actually spreads mold, something you don't want to do.

“You need to remove the moisture issue, it’s one of the things you need to do and whatever it is growing on needs to be removed,” says Jeremy Davidson, President of ServiceMaster by Monroe Restoration.

“It could be as easy as wiping something down if you see it, just a little bit on your window sill or a little bit on a piece of pipe or something like that, but when you’re talking about an entire house contamination, it’s not something that somebody should do on their own.”
Davidson says he can't comment on this situation because he would actually have to test it to confirm its mold.

When talking about mold in general, he says it could cause health issues and that could include bronchitis.

WNDU knocked on the Miami Hills property manager’s door and tried to speak with her but she refused to comment.
