Many of us probably have filing cabinets or drawers designated to storing cancelled checks, old bills, and any other documents containing personal information.

Anyone not destroying these documents properly runs the risk of having their identity stolen.

The possibility of identity theft is the reason why Michiana Crime Stoppers is hosting a shred event Saturday morning in Granger.

Identity thieves got their hands on $54 billion in 2009, with the majority of identities stolen off simply pitching personal papers like bank statements and computer-back up discs instead of destroying the documents.

Local residents can bring personal and business documents to Heritage Square in Granger from 8:00 a.m. until noon on Saturday. The papers can contain some staples, paper clips, and rubberbands. Event coordinators say they can even shred your computer CDs.

Crime Stoppers asks for a $10 minimum donation to help support their reward fund.
