If you heard a bunch of clicking in downtown South Bend on Saturday morning, it was probably the dozens of Michiana men sporting bright red heels.

But their unusual choice in footwear was all for a good cause.

The YWCA of North Central Indiana hosted its fourth annual Men’s March to End Violence Against Women. It is part of the nationwide “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” campaign which encourages men to help raise awareness and funds to prevent sexual assault and domestic violence against their female counterparts.

“This event kind of reinforces the fact that this isn't a women's issue, you know, this is a community issue and there are men in this community that feel strongly that this kind of violence is wrong and want to stand with YWCA in stopping it,” said Linda Baechle, president and CEO of YWCA North Central Indiana. “We serve about 1600 woman and children a year at our facility that are coming in, some from pretty desperate circumstances.”

Walking in heels proved to be a difficult task for many of the men who took part in Saturday’s event. Some were limping and others took the shoes off. A few even fell during the mile-long walk.

But everyone eventually made it to the finish line.
