ST. JOSEPH The iconic light houses in St. Joseph are returning to the city's control.
WSJM reports that the city council voted Monday night to take over the lighthouses on the North Pier.
The federal government currently manages the lighthouses. The city won't have to pay to get them back, but they will be responsible for renovations, including asbestos removal.
An architect estimates restoration will cost about $1.8 million. If the city can't keep up with repairs, the lighthouses will return to federal control.
The federal government declared the 106-year-old structures “uneeded” in 2008.
