A car crash in Marshall County claimed the life of an 86 year-old woman Friday morning.

Just after 8:30 a.m. officers from the Indiana State Police and county rescue personnel responded to a two-vehicle accident on US 31 and 4A Rd. When they arrived, officers found a 1999 Ford Escort in a ditch on the west side of the roadway and a 2011 Jeep Laredo stranded in the center median.

According to investigators, Alice Garner, 86, of Plymouth was attempting to cross southbound US 31 in when she drove her Ford Escort into the path of an oncoming Jeep Laredo.

Witnesses say they saw Garner stop at the intersection, but then watched in disbelief as she proceeded to pull out in front of the oncoming Jeep.

The Jeep’s driver, Jack Teska Jr., 54, of Nappanee sustained minor injuries in the crash and was treated at the scene, but Garner had to be transported to St. Joseph Hospital in Plymouth where she later died from her injuries.

Officials say despite the snow and ice on the road at the time of the crash, the poor conditions do not appear to be responsible.
