Authorities say a gunman ambushed a police officer during a traffic stop in an Indianapolis enclave, shooting him in the head before dying in a gunfight with other officers.
Indianapolis police spokesman Kendale Adams says Fortville Officer Matthew Fox tried to pull over a vehicle Friday night in northwest Hancock County, but the driver fled.
Police say the vehicle stopped in a subdivision in Lawrence, where the driver got out and shot Fox.
Police cornered the 27-year-old suspect in an apartment complex, where he opened fire with an assault rifle. Police say officers returned fire, killing the suspect. An Indianapolis officer's arm was grazed and a Lawrence police dog also was hit during the gun battle.
Adams says Fox was in good condition Saturday following surgery at an Indianapolis hospital.
