A man critically injured in a massive pileup on a highway west of Indianapolis has died.

Indiana State Police said Friday that 25-year-old Harkirat Sohal of Ontario, Canada, died about 11 p.m. Thursday at IU Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Police say Sohal was in the sleeper of a tractor-trailer being driven by his father, 51-year-old Satpal Sohal.

The younger Sohal was critically injured in the Thursday crash near Plainfield about 20 miles west of Indianapolis. At least nine others were injured in the pileup that involved 40 vehicles and closed Interstate 70 for several hours.

Most of the other injuries were minor.

Weather is believed to be a factor in the pileup. Police say snowsqualls cut visibility and led drivers to slow at different rates, triggering the crashes.
