A Saturday morning fire in Elkhart has left one man dead.
Just after 8 a.m., the Elkhart Fire Department was called to the home of Dan and Connie Gagax in the 1300 block of Magnolia Ave. When firefighters arrived, they found heavy smoke coming from the back of the one-story house.
Firefighters made their way to the master bedroom only to find the room completely engulfed in flames.
According to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, Gagax and his visiting mother-in-law managed to escape from the burning home. However for reasons unknown, Gagax ran back inside the house armed with a flashlight and fire extinguisher. He never re-emerged alive.
According to an Elkhart Fire Department media release, between 75 and 80 percent of the home was damaged. However, financial loss totals have not been tabulated.
