It was speed and accuracy that got one Martin's employee in Niles a ticket to the Best Bagger championship competition in Las Vegas. .
In order to make it to the championship you have to beat everyone in your specific Martin's grocery store, then beat everyone in all the other Martin's stores and then you have to beat everyone from all of the Kroger grocery stores.
But 28-year-old Maryann Pears seems to have the magic touch. This will be her third time going to Las Vegas, but her talent does not come without work.
On top of the 40 hours she puts in at the grocery store every week, she has a trainer to help perfect those skills about 9 hours a week.
During the competition they will have to fill 3 bags with groceries in 45 seconds.
Seems simple right? Well there's more. All three of the bags have to weigh the exact same amount.
“Practice, practice, practice. You kind of get a feel of what a 9 pound feels like or 15 pounds. You kind of go through and try to get the weights down so you get a feeling of what's going to be happen when you get there” says Maryann Pears.
She also said that she no longer sees groceries when they are coming down that conveyor belt but pieces to her perfect puzzle.
Needless to say Maryann is the girl you want bagging your groceries because you will never have to worry about those eggs getting smashed again!
The competition is on February 10th. Maryann already gets an all-expense paid trip to Las Vegas, but she could win up to 10-thousand dollars and even a guest appearance on Late Night with David Letterman.
Now she is not the only one from around here going to the competition. Matt Brownbridge works in the Granger store and he too will be competing. He has been working for Martin’s for about 5 years. This will be his first time competing for the national title.
