The Indiana Department of Transportation has a simple solution to the task of renumbering the existing exits of Interstate 69 to account for the extension being built in southern Indiana: Just add 200.
Under the solution the agency laid out Thursday, exit 0 becomes exit 200, exit 10 becomes exit 210, and so on. The 142-mile extension is under construction between Evansville and I-465 around Indianapolis. A 65-mile section between Evansville and the Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center is due to open in late 2012.
The exit renumbering begins next month and is due to finish this fall.
INDOT says it will maintain dual exit signs with the current and new numbers for at least three years. The old exit numbers come down by 2017.
